Örtofta sugar factory (Sweden)
The Örtofta sugar factory was commissioned in 1890. Conversion work carried out in 1952 enabled the factory to produce white sugar instead of raw juice. Production in the early sixties was raised to the processing of 5,000 tonnes of beet per day.
The Örtofta sugar factory in southern Sweden is now one of the largest and most efficient sugar processing factories in the whole of Europe. The factory has a workforce of around 150 permanent staff who are supported by another 110 temporary staff during the campaign. The factory produces sugar, molasses and animal feed. Half of the sugar is sold to the retail trade and the other half to the food industry. In addition, Fibre® is produced in Köpingebro. And since the 2006 sugar beet campaign, Örtofta has also been selling the excess energy it produces to neighbouring district heating systems. This enables carbon dioxide emissions to be reduced by over 8,500 tonnes per year - a major environmental advantage. The energy fed into the district heating grid every year corresponds to the annual consumption of around 3000 detached houses.
